After 2 postponements, the Two Counties Cup Final was eventually played at Doocot Park in Perth on Thursday night. For once it was a beautiful sunny night, despite recent monsoons the pitch was soft but playable and a tremendous Falkland support came to cheer the team on.
Forthill won the toss and put Falkland in to bat. Despite the early run out of Dougie Lawson and the very dubious dismissal of Stuart Lindsay, Falkland got off to a flier due to Rory Manson (26) and six hitting Craig Hepburn (23). After 9 overs Falkland were 64 for 2, but 2 quick wickets slowed the scoring and only 12 runs came from the next 6 overs. Geordie Gallagher and Stephen Meikle batted very sensibly to help the team to reach a commendable 116 for 7 from their 20 overs.
Falkland's success in this tournament has been largely due to the quality of bowling and fielding and hopes were high that on a tricky wicket 116 was a competitive score. Geordie Gallagher made the breakthrough when he clean bowled the prolific Salisbury and then wicketkeeper Gregor Lawson took an excellent catch to remove McConnachie off Thomas Brunton. Unfortunately the left handed opener Dalton stood firm and batted right through the innings for 58 not out to lead his side to victory. The old swinger himself Ozzie Melville was Falkland's outstanding bowler with 1 wicket for 14 off 3 overs and even bowling a maiden! Forthill got the winning run with 7 balls to spare.
This tournament has been a terrific experience for Falkland's young players and the boys who played in the matches should be proud to have performed with distinction against some useful sides. Geordie, Thomas, Stephen, Gregor, Scott, Kieran and Michael all featured in the competition and all did themselves and the club proud. Well done!! Captain Dougie Lawson would also like to thank the oldies Stuart, Rory and Ozzie plus Craig and Mikey Mo for their fantastic enthusiasm and contribution to the cause.
The team very much appreciates the efforts made by supporters to get to the game and encourage the side. To play in a cup final is a memorable event and the boys want more of this in the future please!
Congratulations to Forthill, but watch out, our youngsters will be even stronger next year! |
