Mention Falkland
Cricket Club and cricket lovers conjure up village cricket as it should
he and so it has been since the club was founded in 1860.
The present field and wicket was laid down in 1948 by the generosity of
the late Major Michael Crichton-Stuart. Other grounds which have been
used by the club have been Lower Scroggie and the Palace Orchard.
According to records in 1904 a mere 16 games were played, whereas today
there are nearly 90 fixtures on the card covering the three senior Xl's
and the three junior teams. The clubhouse was built in 1957 by the combined
efforts of Major Michael Crichton-Stuart and the late Sandy Bonthrone
ably assisted by many members and friends. Alterations took place in 1968
and 1981 with major refurbishments in 1992 and 2001/02 again all done
with the help of members and supporters.
In 1979 the club joined the East League, prior to this all matches had
been friendlies. The club progressed through the four divisions of the
East League and were in a position to Join the Scottish Cricket League
in 1996 and hence the National Cricket League in 1998.
Notable past achievements include reaching the Scottish finals of the
Village Cup in 1976,1980 and 1984, we are now excluded from the competition
because of having a paid player/coach. Victories in the Fife K.O. Cup
took place 1975, 80, 93, and 99, we were runners up in 1983, 84, and 94.
In 2002, Falkland achieved its first national honour, when they won the
S.C.U. Trophy beating St. Boswells in the final by 81 runs. |
